Iowa Football Stock Watch: Comparison Time

Welcome to week four of Iowa Football Stock Watch! I’m still recovering from lost sleep after that 7+ hour slog of a game so bear with me. Unlike most of you central time zone folks who got to go bed at a lovely 1:50am, I live in South Bend meaning I went to bed at 2:50 only to wake up at 3:45 to go mow greens a golf course and have all four hours to think to myself weather (see what I did there) Iowa football is actually worth it this year. To which I say……..Maybe?

Just kidding it’s always worth it folks, and to those of you who stayed the entire game Saturday a big salute to you and your fandom.

This weeks Stock Watch has many familiar faces which will continue to pop up throughout the year. It is also the first week I give the offense a

BYU football: Cougars’ defense got a ‘reality check’ from Oregon Ducks

Theories abounded in Provo on Monday and Tuesday as to why the BYU defense, which was so stout against South Florida and Baylor, looked completely lost at Autzen Stadium last Saturday in the embarrassing 41-20 loss to the Oregon Ducks.

A bunch of “heart-to-heart talks” took place as well, according to sophomore defensive lineman John Nelson, who said team leaders such as Lorenzo Fauatea and Tyler Batty spoke up in the defensive line room.

“This is a talented team with a lot of pride. We learned a lesson as coaches, as players. We are embarrassed. But it would be a real mistake for anybody to write off the 2022 Cougars.” — BYU assistant head coach Ed Lamb

“Because that’s what we needed, and coach Kalani (Sitake), doing what he is doing, being a coach, had to give us a reality check,” said Nelson, from nearby Salem Hills High. “I am

BYU football: Offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick reacts to Dallin Holker’s departure

BYU offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick said after practice Wednesday that he never saw backup tight end Dallin Holker’s departure coming.

“I was gutted,” Roderick said.

Asked if he was surprised by the news that broke Tuesday night and was confirmed to the Deseret News by Holker’s father, Roderick replied, succinctly: “Very.”

Bob Holker said via text message that his son plans to enter the transfer portal in December and has interest in several schools.

The junior wants to go “somewhere that will utilize their tight ends and allow him to get on the field and help his team,” Bob Holker said.

Meanwhile, a source close to the situation told the Deseret News: “He says he hasn’t spoken to anyone, but nobody would be surprised if he ends up at Utah.”

Dallin Holker presumably quit the team after three games so he can preserve his redshirt year, which stands as long

College football bowl projections: Appalachian State’s surge continues, Kansas makes long-awaited return

It was an easy week for the teams at the top of the college football rankings — and for most of the top 25 in general. The highest-ranked team to get a challenge this week was Arkansas, which needed a late rally to put away former Razorbacks coach Bobby Petrino’s Missouri State team.

Because of this, there is no change to the College Football Playoff projection, but there is one for the New Year’s Six. As good as last week was for the Sun Belt, the conference slide backwards this week. Marshall came out flat after the win at Notre Dame, losing to Bowling Green in overtime. Louisiana also lost at Rice, and Appalachian State needed a tip drill Hail Mary to beat Troy at home.

A win is a win, though, and App State replaces Marshall as the Group of Five representative in the Cotton Bowl.
