South Korea 2-1 Portugal: Asian giants reach the knockout round with sensational comeback

A late winner for South Korea saw them qualify for the World Cup’s last-16 round ahead of Uruguay.

South Korea defeated Portugal 2-1 in their World Cup game on Friday. A dramatic victory saw Taegeuk Warriors qualify to the next round alongside Portugal.

Last minute surprise!

Portugal started off by stunning their opponents with an early opener.

Following an assist from Diogo Dalot, Ricardo Horta made it 1-0 for Portugal with a precise shot.

South Korea then pushed hard to get back into the game while Portugal looked dangerous on the counter-attacks.

Following a poor clearance from Cristiano Ronaldo, Kim Young-Gwon snatched the equalizer for the Asian giants from close range.

The Koreans tried to complete their comeback in the first half. But their attacks lacked enough edge to break Portugal’s defence.

Portugal went on to find a better start to the second half too. South Korea’s defence line looked shaky on multiple occasions but managed to prevent Portugal from restoring their lead.

South Korea found their feet in the game gradually, increasing the pressure on their opponents’ backline in the final 20 minutes.

However, they had to wait until the 91st minute to secure their qualification to the next round with a match-winner.

Following a fantastic through pass from Son Heung-Min, Hwang Hee-chan made it 2-1 for South Korea.

The goal sent the Asian giants into the next round despite Uruguay’s 2-0 win over Ghana elsewhere in the group. Portugal also secured a spot in the next round as the group winners despite the defeat.

The two sides will discover their last-16 opponents later tonight.
